- One of the most rewarding type of consultations I undertake is where I help the client realise that the extension they require exists already – frequently in the form of an unused room.
- The Case Study below from June 2010 is an excellent example of this…a disused, unloved Dining Room is opened up to the south and west and integrated with the Breakfast Room – by removing a badly located toilet – to create a large gathering space, with SUN ALL DAY!!!
Details:
- House Type: semi-detached, single-storey cottage, Clonsilla
- Built: 1954
- Orientation: South to rear
- Occupants: 2 adults (2 grown children, both frequent visitors)
Issues:
- Need large, comfortable, gathering space for visitors.
- Client idea: extend/renovate existing Sun Room?
- Sun Room very cold in Winter.
- Living Room dark
- Dining Room cold, unused.
Proposals:
- Remove wc, create single space incorporating existing dining and breakfast rooms.
- Provide new south facing window in Dining Room, also double doors to outside in lieu of window, facing evening sun.
- Either remove existing “Sun Room” to allow south light into Living Room or retain and buffer from new dining/family space with glass door.
Comments:
- A room with sun all day is, to me (who lacks one!), a treasure beyond measure.
- The proposal satisfies the clients’ need for a large gathering space.
- More importantly, it enhances every day of their life by the creation of a sunny space with great views of their beautiful garden.
- Seeing sketches of the space in “before” and “after” form is very useful for testing out ideas like these and is an invaluable tool in the service I provide.
