A doctor carries a stethoscope, an accountant a calculator. So what does a House Consultant carry in her bag to help you realise the home of your dreams? Here’s a sneak peek at the 20 most important elements of my House Consultation kit…
We’ll arrange our meeting by phone or by email over my trusty old
- iPhone. It’ll go straight into my
- Diary with details of how to get to your home. First, we’ll sit down and chat: I’ll write everything down in my architect’s
- Black Pen on
- Plain Paper (handy for doodles) and make copies of everything using
- Carbon Paper (yes, you can still get it!). Then we’ll have a look around together. I’ve got a
- Torch for those of you with REALLY bad light issues. If you’re planning an extension or structural changes, we’ll measure the relevant parts of your home together using my 8 metre
- Measuring Tape (I use metric but can chat in feet and inches also). I’ll draw your home/part of your home as it is and to scale – normally 1:50 – on
- Graph Paper using my
- Magic Pencil (it’s really a wand) and a
- Scale Rule. Then, I’ll draw it again on plain
- Tracing Paper and use my
- Masking Tape to pin down fresh sheets of paper as I explore the endless possibilities for your home. Then we’ll discuss the drawings, making fresh drawings for new ideas or using a
- Rubber to alter drawings that need a few tweaks. To best see the untapped potential of your home, I’ll need my
- Glasses and maybe some
- Mints to keep the creative juices flowing. If you’ve got a cat, I’ll need to take my
- Anti-histamines as although I really love cats, I am seriously allergic to them. If there are no drawings involved, we can do a room by room brainstorm and discuss layouts and decor, including colours from my collection of
- Paint Charts. I’ll clip all the information together in a folder using my special architect’s
- Paper Clips and give you a receipt for my fee from my
- Receipt Book. I’ll make sure you have my contact details on my
- Business Card in case you want to email me any questions that crop up after I’ve gone or perhaps arrange a return visit.
